Australian Citizenship Test General

What is Australian Citizenship test ?

From 1 October 2007, applicants for Australian citizenship will need to pass an Australian citizenship test. The citizenship test is designed to assess whether you have an adequate knowledge of Australia and the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.

The test is also designed to assess whether you have a basic knowledge of the English language. English is our national language. Communicating in English helps you to play a more active role in Australian society. It helps you to take full advantage of education, employment and the other opportunities Australia has to offer.

When did the new test begin and what are the changes?

A new citizenship began on 19 October 2009. The key changes are:

  • the test questions have been rewritten in plain English
  • the test does not contain any mandatory questions
  • the pass mark has increased from 60 per cent to 75 per cent
  • the test is based on the Australian Citizenship Pledge that new Australians make when becoming citizens.

If I have already passed an old test do I now have to sit a new test?

No. You will not have to sit another test if you have already passed a test.

Who has to take the test?

Most people applying for citizenship will need to pass the test before they lodge their citizenship application.

People who lodged an application for citizenship before 1 October 2007 will not need to sit the citizenship test.

To sit the test you must:

  • be an Australian permanent resident, and
  • satisfy the department of your identity during the process of registering for the test, and
  • allow the department to take a photograph of you or provide one yourself.

The following persons are not required to sit a test:

  • those who lodged their citizenship application before 1 October 2007, or
  • those aged under 18, or
  • those aged 60 and over, or
  • those who suffer from a substantial impairment or loss of hearing, speech or sight, or
  • those who suffer from a permanent physical or mental incapacity which means you are not capable of understanding the nature of your application, or
  • those who were born to a former Australian citizen, or
  • those who were born in Papua before 16 September 1975 to an Australian citizen born in Australia as currently defined, or
  • persons who are stateless and were born in Australia.

Where can I sit the test?

The questions were taken from 'Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond' handbook. We have made every effort to include everything which is important. The less number of questions means we have virtually no repeating questions in the pool making it easy for our customers.

How many tests can I take on http://www.australiancitizenshiptest.net/ site?

You can take as many tests as you like. There is not limit to the number of tests you can appear on the site. Your account will be deactivated after the subscription period.

Are these questions always randomly selected ?

Similar to the actual test each practice test has 20 questions randomly selected from 'Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond' guide. However if you want to see questions from a specific chapter you may do so by changing your preferences from "randomised test" to "chapterwise test".

What is the difference between randomised test and chapterwise test ?

Randomised test will display random questions from chapters 2,3 and 4 where as chapterwise test will show questions belonging the chosen chapter. Chapterwise test is available to PREMIUM account holders only. As a special introductory offer it has now been extented to BASIC account holders as well.

Login to your account page. Under 'Preferences' section change question type from random to chapterwise. Select the the chapter from the dropdown list. Once the questions in the selected chapter is finished come back to your myaccount page and choose a different chapter from the list.

You can change the question type back to randon at any time if you wish.

We recommend you complete the chapterwise test atleast once for each chapter to ensure that you have covered every inch of the document.

Do you guarantee 100% pass mark in the exam ?

We recommend you study the official guide (which is available on the site). When taking the test if you are in doubt never try to guess answers, click on the question which will open the relevant page from the handbook, read the page again to find out the answer.

We recommend you complete the chapterwise test atleast once for each chapter so that you would cover every inch of the guide.

The questions on this site are not real questions, so do not memorise them. They were prepared to help you pass the test first time saving you money.
